Picking Out Snacks That Don’t Promote Cavities

We get it, in times of stress, bingeing on your favorite sugary treats can be nice. However, too much of a good thing could also mean a higher risk of tooth decay and even gum disease. Fortunately, your Houston, TX, dentist has a few ideas for picking out snacks and meals that don’t promote the onset of cavities and other oral health concerns!

The Common Causes of Tooth Decay (and Other Issues)

How does sugar impact our oral health? Well, when we consume foods and beverages high in sugar, this leaves behind particles on and between our teeth. Bacteria loves sugar particles, and when they consume them, this process not only elevates oral acidity, but coats the teeth in a sticky layer of bacterial byproduct known as plaque. The buildup makes stains more visible and causes bad breath, and also erodes outer enamel and inflames gum tissues, increasing the risk of problems like tooth decay and even gingivitis or gum disease! To avoid this, you not only need to enjoy healthier snacks, but you need to take better care of your smile each day.

Picking Healthy Alternatives

Remember, just because your snacks are better for your smile, doesn’t mean they can’t also be delicious! You can eat more fresh fruits and veggies. Not only do they contain vitamins and nutrients (and taste great), but they also help scrub away plaque as you consume them, especially items like apples, carrots, or broccoli. Low-fat yogurts, cheeses, nuts, sugar-free gum, and whole grain crackers are also smile-healthy snack options. For a beverage, try to drink more water, and if you enjoy a fruit juice or a soda, follow it with a glass of water to help rinse away sugars. You should also brush twice a day for two minutes, and also floss before bed each night too!

When to Talk to Our Team

At the moment, we’re limiting our treatments to emergency care only. Which means if you begin to experience toothaches, or if you damage a tooth, then we can help with lifelike and durable restorations, such as fillings and crowns. We can also address loose or knocked-out teeth, loose or lost dental restorations, or other discomfort or injuries in your teeth and gums. If you have any questions about our approach to emergency dentistry, or about how you can help protect your smile from poor oral health, then contact our team today.
