Does Your Smile Need A Full Or Partial Crown?

A dental crown, whether full or partial, is designed to repair teeth and address serious oral health issues, from advanced decay to cracked or chipped teeth. In today’s blog, your Houston, TX, dentist will take a look at our lifelike and durable restorations, and explain how we use them to transform smiles and improve your overall oral health.

Creating Your Restoration

We typically create them from ceramic, a very strong material that contains stain-resistant properties and can absorbs serious bite forces. In addition, ceramic is translucent like natural tooth enamel and can be shaded to match the color of surrounding tooth structure. To create them, we first clean your tooth and then remove outer structure. We take impressions, measurements, and images of your prepared teeth and use these images and impressions to design and create a dental restoration. When complete, we place them in a second visit with a powerful bonding agent.

Inlays and Onlays

A traditional dental crown covers the entire visible portion of your tooth, meaning we can use them to repair cracks, chips, worn down structure, and advanced decay and infection. We’ve even placed them to address issues with a tooth’s shape and color, and to secure a dental bridge or restore a single tooth dental implant. However, partial crowns, or inlays and onlays, are meant to address issues too severe for a filling, but not substantial enough to require a full crown. An inlay fits in between the cusps on top of the teeth, while an onlay fits over the cusps on top of the teeth. Both will be made from ceramic, just as our full restorations, and care is taken to ensure they look natural and blend with your smile completely.

Preserving Your Smile

Care will be needed to ensure they last for decades, which means you should make sure you brush your teeth twice each day for two minutes, and floss before going to bed. You should also cut back on sugary foods and drinks and avoid cigarettes and tobacco products. Make time to see us every six months for a checkup and cleaning, so we can examine and monitor your smile. A cleaning means removing the plaque that could cause decay and gum disease, threatening your newly repaired tooth unless addressed every few months.
