If we asked how much time has elapsed between your last cleaning and now, what would say? Six months? A year? Two or more years? Often, we find people don’t realize just how vital a routine visit is for keeping your teeth and gums healthy and free of complications, such as cavities and gum disease. In order to help our Houston, TX, patients enjoy healthier smiles, we always recommend a six-month dental cleaning.
We will begin by examining your smile. We will look at the teeth for indicators of developing cavities or infections, as well as wear and friction that could point to teeth grinding or TMJ disorder. Our team will look at the gums for signs of inflammation and periodontal disease, such as redness, recession, or bleeding. For adults, we will also screen for oral cancer. If we find warning signs of trouble, treatment may be recommended to address the issue before it can progress and threaten the stability of your smile.
The cleaning portion involves the use of an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool to remove plaque buildup from your smile. Plaque develops when bacteria break down food particles left on or between your teeth. In the process, oral acidity increases and plaque coats the teeth, which could eventually weaken tooth enamel and inflame gum tissue, boosting the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Having your teeth cleaned helps protect the smile, while also offering brighter teeth, a smoother finish, and fresher breath.
To maintain optimal oral health, we suggest seeing us every six months for treatment. However, what if you experience signs of trouble in between these visits? If you notice tooth sensitivity or toothaches that don’t subside after 48 hours, or if your gums feel sensitive and bleed easily, then please schedule a visit. These could indicate the presence of cavities, or possibly even periodontal disease.
While your six-month visit removes plaque, routine care from home can limit how much plaque is able to accumulate in between these visits. We suggest brushing your teeth when you wake up and again before going to bed, for two minutes each session. Be sure to use a toothbrush with soft bristles and a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Also, make time to floss up and down the length of each side of every tooth before going to bed.
Our team wants to help you and your family enjoy optimal oral health and brighter smiles with preventive dental care. To learn more about our checkup and cleaning visits, then please schedule a consultation with Dr. Michael Chan by calling MMC Dental in Houston, TX, today at (713) 926-8896.
