Do You Need A Full Or Partial Crown?

If you have an oral health concern too advanced to be treated with a filling, then a crown may be the right choice. We have both full and partial options to return smiles to optimal health, function, and beauty. In today’s blog, your Houston, TX, dentist talks about how we restore smiles with our custom and natural-looking dental crowns.

When a Crown is Necessary

A dental crown is meant for decay or damage too severe to be treated with our composite resin fillings or dental bonding procedures. Often, these treatments will help prevent complications linked to tooth loss and serious discomfort. For example, treatment could be necessary for advanced tooth decay or an infected tooth. A crown could repair cracked, chipped, and broken teeth, and even lengthen worn down teeth too. Placement could be used to close gaps between teeth and could even aid in treating tooth loss, securing a bridge in place or restoring a single tooth dental implant.

Crafting a Restoration

To create the restoration, we will first administer a numbing agent to ensure you feel comfortable throughout the procedure. Next, we will remove structure from the tooth and take detailed images with an intraoral camera. We combine these to create a 3D model, which helps us design and craft the restoration in a lab setting. We may use porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or zirconia, all strong materials that can be color-matched to blend with the rest of your smile. We then check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and place it with a powerful bonding agent. Your restoration could then last for decades to come with proper care and attention!

Full, Inlays, and Onlays

A full crown covers everything above the gum line, and is used for a variety of cosmetic and restorative concerns, and even as part of prosthetic placement. Partials address more minor issues. For example, an inlay fits in between the cusps on top of the teeth, and an onlay fits over the teeth. The one we prescribe will depend on a number of factors, including the cause and severity of the oral health concerns we’re treating. If you have a damaged or aching tooth, or one that is misshapen or missing, then give us a call. We will examine your smile and create a treatment plan to improve the health and appearance of your smile.
