Should You Consider Take-Home Whitening?

At home teeth whitening isn’t just limited to over-the-counter strips and toothpastes. Instead, your Houston, TX, dentist can actually offer a set of trays and a special bleaching gel to brighten smiles by multiple shades from home! Should you consider this kit? Find out more in our latest blog!

Advantages Over Store Bought Options

Store bought systems have a few drawbacks. For example, the results they offer aren’t very dramatic, and are short-lived. With a teeth whitening toothpaste, this could contain abrasive ingredients that remove stains, but also inadvertently damage your outer enamel to cause tooth sensitivity. Strips could also be a source of tooth sensitivity as well. In short, your teeth won’t be as bright for as long when you use an over-the-counter treatment option.

The Take Home Process

For significantly brighter smiles, including teeth brightened by up to eight shades, you could try our trays and gel. We begin with an in-office visit, in which we take detailed images and measurements of your smile to create a custom-set of plastic trays. The trays will be sent home with you, along with a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you should fill the trays with gel and wear them for about a half hour to 45 minutes. The trays help prevent saliva from diluting the gel, and also provide even results across your smile. The total treatment period takes about a week to ten days to complete. You can also keep the trays and any remaining gel for any touchups you may need in the coming months.

Keeping Smiles Bright

To keep your smile brighter for longer periods after your treatment, you should make sure you reduce your consumption of drink with dark pigments and tannins, such as coffee, red wine, soda, tea, and fruit juice. Cutting back on foods with sugar and starch is helpful too, as these items encourage plaque and tartar buildup and make stains more visible. Avoiding tobacco products is helpful too, as they cause unsightly brown and yellow stains. Good oral hygiene keeps teeth bright too, so be sure you brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss every evening. You should also see us every six months for a thorough dental cleaning too, so we can remove all plaque and tartar and then polish your teeth!
