Our previous blog was all about dental checkups and cleanings, and how these help safeguard smiles in Houston, TX, from the onset of tooth decay and gum disease. But what if a patient comes to us with the indicators of gingivitis or even the early stages of gum disease? In order to manage the issue and protect overall oral health, we may suggest a deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing.
How does gum disease form? The problem starts when the gum tissue becomes inflamed. Known as gingivitis, gum inflammation could be caused by poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque buildup to accumulate on the teeth and irritate the gum tissue. Inflammation may also be the result of a family history of periodontal problems, smoking and tobacco use, inflammatory illnesses, and the use of certain medications. The gums may begin to feel sore and look red, and bleeding when brushing and flossing could occur. When you begin to experience these warning signs, please see us right away. Treatment could reverse gingivitis and help manage gum disease!
A periodontal cleaning, known as a scaling and root planing, can help stop inflammation and could also manage the early stages of gum disease, protecting your smile from periodontitis, the advanced stage linked to adult tooth loss. The treatment involves the dentist removing the plaque and tartar from the teeth with an ultrasonic scaling device, and smoothing the root surfaces. Gum tissue then heals and helps close periodontal pockets along the gumline. The process could take one visit, or up to four, depending on the extent of your buildup. Following treatment, we will schedule routine cleanings every three to four months to help your smile stay healthy!
You could make changes to your daily routine to help limit the severity of periodontal issues. For example, make time every day to brush twice for two minutes and to floss before going to bed. Avoid tobacco products and cut back on sugary foods and drinks, which feed harmful, plaque-causing bacteria. Make it to see us for regular cleanings, and let us know if you notice changes to your smile, such as redness or bleeding. If you have any questions about the scaling and root planing, or about protecting your smile, then let us know!
