Improving Smile Symmetry With Gum Contouring

What happens when your smile displays too much gum? Known as a gummy smile, this could cause problems with esthetics that cannot be addressed with veneers or teeth whitening. However, with gum contouring, your Houston, TX, dentist can actually correct these issues, and often in as little as one visit.

The Impact of a Gummy Smile

When you have issues that cause inflammation or display too much gingival tissue, this could alter the appearance of your teeth, making them appear short and uneven. No amount of traditional cosmetic treatments could offer improvement, as the gum line symmetry itself is the problem. Fortunately, we have a possible solution with our cosmetic contouring procedure.

Treatment with Laser Technology

Using an advanced dental laser, we will trim away excess tissues to reshape and correct the symmetry gum line. Using lasers instead of scalpels and sutures means treatment with precision and accuracy. The patient also may not need anesthesia at all, and there is rarely any bleeding or infection afterward, as the concentrated beam of light cauterizes the area. The patient will need to rest for a day, but afterward can return to normal activities. The treatment itself only takes one visit to complete as well!

Treatment for Periodontal Disease

In addition to cosmetic applications, we could also address periodontal disease. In the late stages, a scaling and root planing may not be enough to begin managing the disease. Instead, we could use the laser to remove infected and diseased tissues. Allowing healthy tissues to once again adhere to the teeth. This helps reduce the depth of periodontal pockets, and allows us to begin managing the issue with regular dental cleanings every three to four months. Again, the technology enables us to treat the issue with precision, preventing healthy surrounding tissues from becoming damaged.

Tooth Contouring

We also have a very different contouring procedure to improve the beauty of the teeth. We don’t use advanced technology, instead we gently sand and buff the outer structure to reshape them, repair minor damage, dull sharp or pointed portions, and even remove rough patches, pits, and grooves from the outside of the teeth. This process also only takes one visit to complete, and helps improve the beauty of your smile.

If you have any questions about either of our unique contouring technologies, or about how we help patients manage periodontal disease and avoid tooth loss, then contact our team today to learn more.
